Fire. It’s a good word to describe my career and my personality. I’ve been in a lot of trial by fire situations from managing crisis communications for natural disasters, writing about small town murders that made national headlines and igniting my passions for social media, clean energy, healthcare and emerging technologies.

I started out my career as a newspaper reporter at the age of 16 when I walked into my town’s newspaper office to see if I could get a job sorting film in the darkroom. The editor looked at me and screamed, “I’m trying to put out a fire here!” Then the lightbulb went off. He remembered I worked for the high school newspaper. He had forgotten to send a reporter to an important event.

The editor threw a camera at me. “Go take pictures, come back here and write a story. If I like it, you got a job.” I got the job and stayed there, writing news, taking pictures, souping film — whatever they needed me to do until I left for college. I was hooked. There’s no other adrenaline rush like being in a newsroom during a breaking story. There’s not many jobs where you talk to a homeless man and a senator in the same day.

After spending a few years in the newsroom, and racking up a few writing awards in the process, I moved on to website development and marketing communications. Since I started my career, we’ve gone from newspapers and television being our primary forms of information to Facebook and Twitter. I’ve enjoyed being at the forefront of it all.

As the Social Media Practice Director for the firm, I get to extend my knowledge gained from working with public utilities, software start-ups, nonprofits, luxury travel firms and healthcare companies to help my clients build community engagement.

I started my first blog in 2007 and loved Twitter from the day it started. It allows me to get back to the storytelling and writing that I first fell in love with at 16. Social media has allowed me to “meet” and make friends with hundreds of people from around the world that share my fiery passions (don’t get me started on politics or we’ll be talking for a long time). It’s this ability go directly to the people to tell them what I find interesting about my clients that I enjoy the most.
